His Kingdom Is Forever

I've been wondering what my first post would be for the new blog. A lot has changed in my thinking since I started the 3BDBS blog, and that's fine. It has a lot of memories from the years since I started it. A lot has changed since 2010. As a new day dawns, priorities change and a new blog is a fitting first start.

As anyone with some access to TV or the Internet knows by now, the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage today across the nation. Social media is buzzing with some people celebrating and others who are mourning either the rejection of God's law or a foreseen persecution of the church. There are enough people commenting on these things, and that is not my point here.

On the way home from work today, a few things were going through my mind. The first thing is that marriage isn't an end in itself. Marriage is an analogy for something else: Christ and the Church. The court gave legal rights for two people of the same sex to get married, but that can never redefine marriage. Christ's relationship with his bride, the Church, will never be defined by anything but God, no matter what the state says, nor what any Christians says. Marriage is not about two people. Marriage is fundamentally about an eschatological relationship between God and man.

The second thing going through my mind is that we are pilgrims. America is not our home. We are citizens of heaven, and like our father Abraham, we are looking for a city whose designer and builder is God. Our homes are tents as we await the second coming of Jesus Christ, our bride-groom. He will come again, he will make all things right, and he finally destroy all the remnants of death and the devil from the world. We will live forever in the new heavens and new earth, married to God himself.

I'll end with the fitting lyrics of Martin Luther:
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
The body they may kill: God's truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever,
